Today, Walton Academy marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a vibrant and respectful celebration, bringing history to life for our school community.

Staff and students embraced the spirit of the 1940s, with many members of staff dressing as land girls, service personnel and in other period attire. Some students also joined in by wearing their cadet, St John Ambulance and scout uniforms, proudly representing organisations that continue the legacy of service and community spirit. The academy was decorated in patriotic colours and filled with the sounds of Glenn Miller and other wartime favourites, creating a truly immersive atmosphere.

VE Day, Victory in Europe Day, commemorates the end of the Second World War in Europe on 8 May 1945. It marks a moment of celebration and remembrance, as nations came together to honour peace and pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed. The 80th anniversary is a significant milestone, giving students a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the legacy of this historic event.

Throughout the day, faculties engaged students in themed classroom activities, linking the past to the present through creative and educational tasks. Year 9 students proudly showcased their entries for the VE Day poster competition, with their thoughtful and artistic tributes on display for all to see.

At break time, students were treated to specially made cupcakes, adding a sweet touch to the day’s commemorations.

We would like to thank everyone involved in organising and supporting today’s events. Your efforts helped make this anniversary celebration both educational and memorable for all.
