Students from Walton Academy’s Gardening Club proudly represented the school at this year’s Lincolnshire Show, taking part in the Secondary Schools Challenge for the very first time.
The Lincolnshire Show, now in its 140th year, is a major event that celebrates the county’s rich heritage in food, farming, and the environment. Organised by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, the two-day event draws thousands of visitors and includes a wide range of educational and hands-on activities.
Our students engaged fully in the experience, speaking to visitors, exploring the show’s many exhibits, and participating in livestock tours where they had the opportunity to meet pigs, sheep, and cows up close. The group also experienced some of the event’s highlights, including a Spitfire flypast, displays from the Red Arrows and the Red Falcons parachute team, and a Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Students were excited to spot The Princess Royal during her visit on Wednesday. On Thursday, the team was delighted to meet broadcaster and presenter Matt Baker to their stand, where he spoke with students and tried out their VR headset garden fly-through – a feature that helped bring their project to life for visitors.
We are very proud to share that the group placed 2nd in the secondary schools category, which was a fantastic result for a team attending the event for the first time. The students’ enthusiasm, teamwork and commitment impressed both judges and visitors. We now look forward to hearing the outcomes of the people’s choice and best newcomers awards.
Plans are already underway for next year’s entry, and we are excited to build on this success.
Well done to everyone involved.
