Walton Academy has been awarded the foundation level of the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of our commitment to bringing the world into the classroom.
The award celebrates the achievements of schools that go above and beyond to develop international education. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, ensuring young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need for life and work in today’s world.
At Walton, international experiences are woven into everyday learning. Our annual celebration of the European Day of Languages includes the much-loved singing contest LinguaVision, while lessons bring Hispanic and Francophone cultures to life through traditions such as Día de Muertos and La Chandeleur.
On hearing the news, Miss Edwards, Head of MFL, said:
“It is fantastic to receive this award in recognition of the work taking place at Walton Academy. Languages are not only about words but about people, cultures, and experiences. Our students are gaining a wider understanding of the world around them, and that is something we are very proud of.”
Shannon West, Head of UK Schools for the British Council, added:
“Walton Academy’s international work has earned the school well-deserved recognition with the British Council International School Award – Foundation Certificate. We are delighted and proud that Walton Academy is committed to developing a whole-school approach to embedding and celebrating international work. The dedication from everyone is enriching education and supporting globally aware young people and the development of key skills.”
The British Council highlighted Walton’s application as an excellent example of how language learning and cultural celebrations can effectively introduce an international dimension to education. The feedback praised activities such as LinguaVision as “an impactful and fun way to develop a love of languages” while opening opportunities to connect with art, music, food, and cultural traditions.
The International School Award is a globally recognised scheme, now available in countries including Greece, India, and Nigeria. Walton Academy is proud to be part of this global community and looks forward to building on this success as we continue to expand our international work.
