Suthers School 5 – Walton Academy 1
Walton Academy’s year 7 football team faced a new challenge on a cold afternoon in Newark, taking on Suthers School in a fixture that brought an unbeaten run to an end but showcased growing teamwork and resilience.
Excitement was high on the journey to Suthers, and after a brisk warm-up Walton got the game underway. With several players competing together for the first time, Walton took time to settle and found themselves 2–0 down within the opening five minutes. Despite the early setback, strong leadership from Noah, George and Jeshurun helped steady the team, with Walton beginning to find their shape, fluency and focus.
Suthers added a third goal midway through the half, but Walton responded positively. In the 19th minute, a well-worked move through midfield resulted in a deserved goal for Walton, reducing the deficit to 3–1 and rewarding a spell of improved play.
At half-time, the team regrouped, adjusted their shape and refocused on their approach for the second half. Walton returned to the pitch determined and, for long periods, looked the stronger side. Leon caused problems with his footwork, creating chances, while Noah worked tirelessly in midfield and Mayson chased down every loose ball. At the back, Raed defended resolutely.
Despite Walton’s pressure, Suthers extended their lead to 4–1. Walton continued to battle, with Harvey producing an excellent penalty save to keep the scoreline unchanged. Suthers eventually added a fifth goal with a header at the back post, but Walton did not drop their heads. Further chances followed for Will, Noah and Mayson before the final whistle was blown.
Although the result did not go Walton’s way, the performance, particularly in the second half. showed real progress. The team demonstrated togetherness, effort and a willingness to work for one another, laying strong foundations for future fixtures. Noah was named Player of the Match for his tireless work rate and leadership in midfield, with a number of strong contributions across the team. Well done to all involved for a committed and encouraging team performance.
