Today, Walton Post 16 students welcomed Melanie Bailey, founder of Peer Genius, who delivered an engaging session about the power of peer mentoring and the opportunities available through the programme.

Peer Genius is an initiative that trains GCSE and A Level students to become peer tutors and mentors, enabling them to support younger learners with academic guidance, motivation and study skills. The programme is built around the idea that students often learn effectively from those closer to their own age, who understand the challenges they are experiencing and can offer relatable support and encouragement.

During the session, Melanie explained how students can become involved as Peer Genius mentors, working with younger learners to help build confidence, strengthen subject understanding and develop positive study habits. In doing so, mentors themselves gain valuable experience in leadership, communication and teaching — skills that are highly valued by universities and employers.

Students were particularly interested in how mentoring others can also deepen their own understanding of subjects, while making a meaningful difference to the learning journey of younger students.

A big thank you to Melanie Bailey for visiting today and introducing our post 16 students to the exciting opportunity to work with Peer Genius, mentoring younger learners while developing valuable leadership skills.
