On Wednesday 6 May, the Walton Academy awards evening brought together students, along with families and staff, to mark the progress, character, and contributions that define life at Walton.
Held in the academy’s main hall, the evening opened with a performance from this year’s production of Matilda The Musical Jr., as cast members performed When I Grow Up. The performance set a warm and uplifting tone for the evening while showcasing the confidence, creativity, and talent of Walton students.
The Principal, Jess Leonard, then welcomed guests, describing the evening as an inaugural event for years 7 to 10 and a fitting way to highlight the dedication shown by students to their studies and to the Walton community.
Throughout the evening, students were acknowledged not only for academic achievement, but also for the positive role they play within academy life. Faculty awards reflected success across a broad and balanced curriculum, with students commended for their engagement, progress, enthusiasm, resilience, and commitment both in the classroom and beyond.
As part of Walton Academy’s Diamond Anniversary year, marking 60 years at the heart of the community, students receiving awards were also presented with a commemorative pin badge to wear on their blazers in recognition of this milestone year.
Following a short interval, guests enjoyed a piano performance by Amaya, who performed a rendition of an Alicia Keys song, before the evening continued with the presentation of Duke of Edinburgh’s Award certificates and badges. The awards recognised students who have demonstrated perseverance, independence, and commitment through the completion of their Bronze Award.
Speaking about the achievement of the students, Assistant Principal Mike Hoad, said:
“Handing out Duke of Edinburgh’s Award certificates and badges is always a moment of real pride. The challenges the students faced, and their resilience and perseverance through the expedition and other sections, really demonstrates the maturity and strength of each and every one of them. Well done everyone!”
As the evening drew to a close, the High Flyer awards celebrated students demonstrating strong academic potential and a clear focus in their studies. The presentation of the Wendy Waudby Memorial Award provided a fitting conclusion to the evening, recognising a student whose impact within Walton Academy has stood out.
Reflecting on the evening, Principal Jess Leonard said:
“I am delighted that we have been able to take the time this evening to celebrate our Walton superstars. It is wonderful to have them and their families here to mark their achievements. All of the students who have received awards have shown real commitment and dedication to their studies and our Walton community. I am very proud of each and every one of them.”
The evening was a reminder that success takes many forms, from consistent effort and personal growth to academic accomplishment and wider contribution.
Congratulations to all those recognised. We look forward to seeing how they continue to develop and achieve in the years ahead.
Year 11 students will be recognised later this year at a dedicated celebration evening in November, where we look forward to welcoming them back to the academy to share in their successes and reconnect with staff and friends.
