Year 10 geography students swapped the classroom for the Yorkshire coastline this week as they travelled to Mappleton and Hornsea to complete an important element of their GCSE geography fieldwork.
Taking place across Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 July as part of Walton Academy’s community week, two groups of students each spent a day on the Yorkshire coast, carrying out physical fieldwork and collecting data to support their GCSE fieldwork enquiry.
The Holderness Coast provides an ideal location for students to investigate coastal processes and management, with the area experiencing some of the fastest rates of coastal erosion in Europe.
At Mappleton, students headed onto the beach to carry out their investigations, collecting data and examining the coastline first-hand. They were able to see the impact of erosion and explore how coastal management strategies are being used to protect the village and surrounding area.
The groups then travelled along the coast to Hornsea, where further fieldwork was completed from the seafront promenade. Comparing the two locations enabled students to consider how coastal processes and management can affect different stretches of coastline.
The trip is an important part of the GCSE Geography course, allowing students to put the knowledge and skills developed in lessons into practice. The data collected will support their fieldwork enquiry and help prepare them for questions relating to geographical fieldwork in their final GCSE examinations.
Alongside the academic work, students had the opportunity to enjoy some time on the Yorkshire coast and purchase lunch, including the traditional seaside favourite of fish and chips.
