This week, year 13 geography students from Walton Post 16 spent three days at the Cranedale Centre in Yorkshire, gaining valuable hands-on experience as they explore human and physical geography beyond the classroom.
The residential visit provided an opportunity for students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world environments, develop essential geographical skills and build confidence in conducting independent investigations.
The first day took students to Scarborough, where they explored the concept of changing places, investigating what gives the town its identity and how different locations are experienced and perceived. Using techniques including observation, descriptive word pictures and emotional mapping, students gathered evidence before analysing their findings and exploring digital mapping techniques.
On day two, students visited Flamborough Head to investigate coastal landscapes and processes. They examined evidence of erosion, weathering and mass movement before carrying out practical investigations at Selwicks Bay, measuring beach profiles and sediment size to explore the effects of longshore drift. An evening statistics workshop provided an opportunity to analyse their data and identify patterns.
The final day took students to Dalby Forest, where they investigated water and carbon cycles within a catchment. Activities include vegetation surveys, measuring trees to estimate carbon storage, testing soil infiltration rates and measuring stream flow.
Throughout the visit, students developed their ability to select appropriate research methods, collect and interpret data, and critically evaluate their findings. These experiences will support their A level geography non-examined assessments (NEAs), while strengthening transferable skills such as problem-solving, analytical thinking and independent learning.
The trip reflects Walton Post 16’s commitment to providing enriching experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom, encouraging students to develop their interests, build confidence and prepare for their next steps in education and beyond.
