Year 11 students at Walton Academy have been looking ahead to life beyond GCSEs, gaining valuable insights into further education, careers and the world of work during our next steps day.

Held on Thursday 22 October, the event brought together local employers, education providers and industry professionals to help students explore future pathways, develop essential skills and build confidence as they prepare for their next chapter.

Throughout the day, students took part in a range of interactive workshops designed to introduce them to different industries, develop practical skills and support their personal development.

Representatives from the NHS Talent Academy, as part of the Lincolnshire NHS programme, explored the wide range of careers available within the NHS, while Lincoln Bishop University delivered a session on effective study skills. Grantham College provided an engineering taster session, giving students an insight into this practical and technical career pathway.

Students also explored the importance of looking after their wellbeing during the GCSE exam season with Grantham Squash Club. PVS Media introduced students to photography, media projects and the opportunities available through work experience in the creative industries.

Putting interview skills into practice

A key part of the day was the opportunity for students to experience a mock job interview with a local employer.

Following a session on interview preparation, students selected one of three job roles and put their skills to the test in a realistic interview setting.

This gave students valuable first-hand experience of the recruitment process, helping them practise communicating their strengths, answering questions and presenting themselves professionally. It was also an opportunity to build confidence and develop skills that will be useful for future post 16 applications, apprenticeships and employment.

The interviews were supported by professionals representing a wide range of sectors, including finance, marketing, media, design, renewable energy and property.

Working together to inspire future opportunities

We are extremely grateful to the organisations and individuals who generously gave their time and expertise to support our students.

Our thanks go to NHS Talent Academy, Lincoln Bishop University, Grantham College, Grantham Squash Club, and PVS Media for delivering the workshops.

We would also like to thank our mock interview volunteers from FundingRound, Nettl of Newark and Grantham, Shh! PR, Greenio, PVS Media, Crisp Financial and David Grace Estate Agents, alongside Walton Academy governors Mr Dave Morgan and Mrs Karin Hardy.

Special thanks also go to Ms Lucy Painter, Enterprise Adviser, working with the The Careers & Enterprise Company and Greater Lincolnshire Careers Hub, for her valuable support with the event.

Next steps day forms an important part of our commitment to careers education at Walton Academy, helping students make informed decisions about their futures while developing the confidence, skills and aspirations to take their next steps.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this valuable experience possible for our Year 11 students.
