Walton Academy 3 – Charles Read Academy 3
Walton Academy’s year 8 football team kicked off their season on Wednesday 21 October with an entertaining 3–3 draw against Charles Read Academy. Despite challenging conditions, with heavy rain and strong winds making play difficult, both teams showed determination and resilience in a closely contested fixture.
The opening minutes saw both sides struggle to retain possession as they adjusted to the conditions. However, Walton made the breakthrough in the seventh minute when Zack found the net to give the home side an early 1–0 lead.
With the weather continuing to test both teams, Walton worked hard to build on their advantage. Their persistence paid off in the 19th minute when sustained pressure from the forwards caused problems in the Charles Read penalty area, resulting in an own goal and doubling Walton’s lead to 2–0.
At half-time, Mr Judge praised the team for their efforts and positive first-half performance. A few changes were made before Walton returned to the pitch looking to maintain their advantage.
Charles Read responded strongly after the break, putting Walton under pressure and pulling a goal back. The visitors continued to push forward and soon found an equaliser, bringing the score to 2–2 in the 40th minute.
With ten minutes remaining, Walton made further changes in an effort to regain control, but it was Charles Read who struck next, completing their comeback to take a 3–2 lead.
Walton refused to give up and continued to create opportunities, testing the visiting goalkeeper, who produced several excellent saves to keep his side ahead. Their determination was finally rewarded with just two minutes remaining when Noah struck a superb half-volley from the edge of the penalty area, sending the ball into the bottom right-hand corner to level the score at 3–3.
The final whistle brought an end to an exciting contest, with both teams having given everything in difficult conditions.
There were plenty of positives for Walton to take from their opening fixture, particularly the team’s determination to fight back after losing their two-goal advantage. Zak was named player of the match for his outstanding effort and contribution throughout, while goalkeeper Oliver also deserves special recognition for a strong performance between the posts.
A hard-fought draw against strong opposition and an encouraging start to the season for our year 8 team. Well done to everyone involved!
