This week, Walton Academy’s year 10 students embarked on an educational excursion to the picturesque Yorkshire coastline as part of their GCSE Geography curriculum. On Wednesday 10 July, a group of students visited Mappleton and Hornsea to study the impact of coastal management on erosion processes.
Under the guidance of their teachers, the year 10 students had the opportunity to observe one of the fastest eroding coastlines in Europe. At Mappleton, they examined the various characteristics of the beach and coastal defences. Through direct interaction with the environment and conversations with local residents, the students gained valuable insights into how coastal management strategies are implemented and their effects on both the landscape and the community.
The hands-on experience provided a unique opportunity for students to connect theoretical knowledge from their GCSE Geography coursework with real-world applications. By studying the coastal erosion and management techniques firsthand, the students were able to deepen their understanding of key geographical concepts, enhancing their academic learning with practical observation and analysis.
Miss Lee, reflecting on the day out, shared her pride in the students. “We’ve had a fantastic day at Mappleton and Hornsea. The weather was lovely and warm, and our students were brilliant. The year 10s who attended were hard-working and well-mannered. They really made us proud, and it was a joy to spend the day with them.”
Following their educational investigations, the students enjoyed some well-deserved relaxation with traditional fish and chips, and an ice cream by the sea.
Another group of year 10 students is making the same trip today. The school extends its thanks to the dedicated teachers who are accompanying them.
