Why choose A level chemistry?
Chemistry covers essential topics such as atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, and organic chemistry, providing students with critical problem-solving and analytical skills.
With its emphasis on practical experiments and scientific thinking, chemistry develops innovators prepared for challenges in a wide range of fields.
This subject can be studied at AS and A level.
Course type: A level
Board: AQA
Entry requirement: Grade 7-7 in GCSE combined science or grade 7 or above in GCSE chemistry with grade 6 in biology, physics and maths
How is A level chemistry delivered?
Unit | Content |
Physical chemistry | Delivered through classroom lessons, practical experiments, and independent study. Topics include atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, and equilibria |
Inorganic chemistry | Covers trends in the periodic table, group chemistry, transition metals, and reactions. Assessed through written examinations |
Organic chemistry | Focuses on carbon-based compounds, reaction mechanisms, and analytical techniques. Includes experimental write-ups and is assessed via exams |
Assessment
AS level
- Two written exam papers worth 50% (1 hour 30 minutes each)
A level
- Three written exam papers (2 hours each)
- Paper 1 and Paper 2: 35% each
- Paper 3: 30% of final grade
- No coursework
Progression
Students can enter into a wide range of fields including further study in veterinary science, medicine, accountancy, forensics, pharmacology and chemical engineering.
