On Wednesday 9 July 2025, students from Walton Academy’s gardening club had the unique opportunity to visit RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire — a day packed with awe-inspiring experiences, exclusive access, and even a touch of gardening.
Accompanied by Mr Hoad and Miss Charity, students were warmly welcomed by Squadron Leader David Cooper, Officer Commanding Mission Support Flight, who organised and hosted the visit. His enthusiasm and insight set the tone for a truly unforgettable day. Students were also fortunate to spend time with Squadron Leader Doug Smith, Chief of Staff, who answered their questions and shared his knowledge about life at the base and the precision and planning behind the Red Arrows’ operations.
The day began with a mission briefing in the mess room before students joined the pilots as they prepared for a flyover at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. They witnessed the crucial MET weather briefing process, giving them a rare behind-the-scenes look at the level of coordination involved in each flight.
A highlight for many was getting to sit in the pilots’ famous red chairs and enjoy lunch in the mess, just like members of the RAF team. Students also had the chance to handle a G-force suit, climb into the cockpit of a decommissioned Red Arrow Hawk T1 jet, and pose for photos perched on the wing.
The excitement peaked as the students watched the Red Arrows perform part of the aerial display sequence they’ll be showcasing at Goodwood. As the jets soared overhead, the pilots gave the students a wave on take-off — a moment that won’t be forgotten any time soon.
Before leaving, the gardening club planted up a planter on the base in red and white, reflecting the colours of the iconic display team.
This unforgettable visit gave students the chance to explore science, teamwork and practical skills in a real-world setting. A huge thank you to Squadron Leaders David Cooper and Doug Smith, and to everyone at RAF Waddington who made the day so special. We’re incredibly grateful to have been invited back and value the opportunity for more students to benefit from such an inspiring experience.
