West Grantham Academy 0 – Walton Academy 2

On Friday 11 July, Walton Academy staff travelled to West Grantham Academy for a highly anticipated after-school football fixture. Despite the hot and challenging conditions, the match provided a great opportunity to strengthen links between both schools and bring colleagues together in a shared spirit of teamwork and friendly competition.

The game began with both teams settling into their rhythm and assessing their opposition. After an even opening ten minutes, Walton began to create chances and found the breakthrough shortly after the quarter-hour mark. A well-weighted pass from Mr Judge set up Mr Birchenough, who finished confidently to give Walton a 1-0 lead.

The remainder of the half saw some intense passages of play, with both sides competing hard in midfield. Just before the break, an unfortunate incident saw Mr Judge’s trainers give way under the pressure, prompting an unscheduled change in footwear. The referee called half-time shortly after, giving both teams a much-needed opportunity to rehydrate and regroup.

Walton kicked off the second half with the wind behind them and made a tactical change, with Mr Dean coming on to replace Mr Howell. The team continued to apply pressure, creating several chances through Mr Walters, Mr Birchenough and Mr Judge. Their persistence was eventually rewarded with a second goal, extending the lead and giving Walton breathing room.

West Grantham responded with a strong attacking spell, but Walton remained composed. Mr Booth produced a series of excellent saves to preserve the clean sheet, while defensive efforts from Mr Parry, Mr Howell and Mr Bacon ensured the score remained 2-0.

The match also drew the attention of several year 9 and year 10 Walton students, who watched from beyond the fence and offered plenty of encouragement – much to the amusement and appreciation of the staff on the pitch.

It was a well-contested and good-spirited game, with Walton staff putting in a solid performance full of determination and teamwork. A big thank you to West Grantham for being great hosts and contributing to such an enjoyable match.
