On Tuesday 24 March, Walton Academy students took to the pitch for a much-anticipated charity football match, as year 11 faced year 10 in a competitive and spirited fixture.

Before kick-off, both teams came together for the team photo – year 11 wore multicolours to represent Cancer Research, while year 10 wore Walton green, highlighting the academy’s collective commitment to raising funds and awareness for an important cause.

Both sides gathered in their huddles for final instructions, led by student managers Mason (year 11) and Jason (year 10), before the match got underway in challenging, windy conditions.

Year 11 began strongly, playing into the wind and dominating possession early on. However, it was year 10 who struck first. A long through ball from goalkeeper Oliver S found Daniel B, who battled past defenders before finishing confidently with his left foot to make it 1–0.

The goal sparked a strong response from year 11. Increasing the tempo and exploiting space down the left, Elijah cut inside to equalise before Ben quickly added a second. Just before half-time, Elijah struck again to give year 11 a commanding 3–1 lead following an impressive spell of play.

At the break, year 10 regrouped, with encouragement and tactical guidance from Miss Lucas and Jason. Meanwhile, year 11 made key adjustments, with Mason working alongside Mr Howell to refine their approach ahead of the second half.

Year 10 came out with renewed determination and, after a period of pressure from year 11, found a way back into the game. Corban delivered a well-timed pass from the left to Daniel, who calmly finished to reduce the deficit to 3–2 and set up a tense final few minutes.

Despite pushing for an equaliser, year 10 were unable to break through again, as year 11 maintained control in the closing stages to secure the win.

At full time, the competitive nature of the match gave way to a strong display of sportsmanship, with both teams recognising the greater purpose behind the fixture. The event brought students together to raise funds for cancer, contributing to vital research and support for those affected.

A fantastic effort from all involved, both on and off the pitch.
