On Tuesday 24 March, year 8 students at Walton Academy took part in a powerful and thought-provoking theatre experience as Box Clever Theatre Company brought The Hate Play into school.
The performance explored the complex dynamics of teenage friendships, peer pressure and the serious impact of bullying, including hate-related behaviour. Through the story of four young people navigating relationships, choices and consequences, students were given an honest and unfiltered insight into how harmful behaviours can affect individuals and wider communities.
Following the performance, students took part in an interactive workshop, revisiting key moments from the play and exploring how different choices and interventions could lead to more positive outcomes. This gave students the opportunity to reflect on their own role in challenging negative behaviour and supporting others.
Students shared their thoughts on the experience:
Micah said:
“It was really creative how they showed the issue of bullying. The performance made me feel a lot of empathy for the victim.”
Theia added:
“It showed the impact bullying can have and reminded us that everyone has feelings. It can affect people for a long time.”
Director of Box Clever Theatre Company, Riad Richie, said:
“Through The Hate Play, we want to give young people access to high-quality theatre that feels relevant to their lives and experiences. It’s about helping them recognise what’s happening in relationships that can turn difficult, and encouraging them to think differently about the choices they make.
We aim to plant ideas that stay with them – raising awareness, shifting perspectives and giving them the confidence to respond in more positive ways. The students at Walton Academy were incredibly engaged, and it’s been a pleasure to bring this work into such a welcoming space. Walton Theatre has been a fantastic setting for our final performance.”
The session encouraged open discussion, giving students the confidence to share their views and consider how they can contribute to a safe, respectful environment within school and beyond.
We would like to thank Box Clever Theatre Company for delivering such an engaging and meaningful experience for our students.
Box Clever Theatre Company will be returning to Walton Academy in the autumn term for a rehearsal residency as they develop a new production of Romeo and Juliet. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to the creative process, with their ideas helping to shape elements of the final performance.
