Year 11 GCSE food preparation and nutrition students enjoyed a unique workshop today with the Commando Chef, CSgt Mike Beaton, and MNE Seth Waterman – Royal Marine Commandos who use cooking to connect with young people and inspire them to think about their futures.
Students were actively involved in preparing and cooking a healthy meal, developing not only practical culinary skills but also essential life skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and confidence. In addition to the hands-on cooking, they had the exciting opportunity to explore and learn about the kit used by Royal Marine Commandos, gaining a first-hand insight into the discipline, resilience, and dedication required in military training. This combination of practical experience and exposure to real-world skills offered students a unique perspective on how determination and focus can shape future opportunities.
CSgt Mike Beaton and MNE Seth Waterman shared their personal stories and explained how the skills developed through the military can open up a wide range of opportunities, both in service and in future careers. For our students, the session was not only about cooking but also about motivation, empowerment and recognising how support and training can help them achieve their ambitions.
This event formed part of our wider careers guidance programme, offering year 11s the chance to experience something different, gain inspiration, and reflect on the pathways available to them beyond school.
