Leah Rhiannon Savage
I attended Walton Academy from 2009 to 2016.
After leaving Walton, I went on to study history at university, completing a BA and MA in history before continuing my training with a PGCE in higher education. History had always been my favourite subject at school, and I was proud to be known as the “history geek”. I was fortunate to be taught by inspiring teachers, particularly Mrs Wells and Mrs Gilbert, who encouraged my love for the subject and showed me what passion for learning really looks like.
Some of my favourite memories include Mrs Gilbert’s introduction to A level history set to the song Uprising by Muse — a moment I still think of every time I hear that track — and the unforgettable Normandy trip with Mrs Wells and Mr Beavers. I was also taught by Mr Morgan and Mr Wakefield, and I will always be grateful for the support and encouragement they gave me.

Today, I work as an autism specialist tutor at Nottingham Trent University, providing mentoring and study skills support for students through the Disabled Students’ Allowance. Alongside this, I am a staff writer and sub-editor for The Historians Magazine and The Little Historians Magazine, where I help support and promote historians at different stages of their careers. I am also a hidden disabilities advocate and am passionate about supporting and championing people with disabilities in education and beyond.
My time at Walton played a huge part in shaping who I am today. The encouragement I received, the teachers who believed in me, and the love of learning I developed all helped lead me into a career in education. I would encourage students to embrace their interests, be proud of what they enjoy, and never underestimate how far a passion for learning can take you.
