During this year’s community week, Walton Academy has once again been alive with energy, creativity, and talent as students took part in a week-long performing arts workshop centred around the upcoming school production of Matilda the Musical Jr.

The week began with a highly anticipated production launch in the Walton Theatre. After weeks of speculation, students were excited to learn that Matilda would be the next show to hit the stage. Excitement filled the room as students dived straight into a packed schedule of workshops designed to build their skills in acting, singing, dance, and the technical aspects of theatre.

Throughout the week, students explored key scenes and songs from the show, including lively numbers such as “Revolting Children” and “Bruce”. Drama sessions focused on character development and storytelling, while dance rehearsals challenged students with high-energy choreography. Singing workshops gave both ensemble and principal roles the chance to work on harmonies, timing, and expression.

Behind the scenes, the production team were equally busy. Students interested in the technical side of theatre learned about stage management, and contributed to early costume and set design ideas. Script breakdowns, blocking exercises, and detailed character work allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of the world of Matilda and the demands of a full-scale musical production.

Auditions took place midweek, with students showcasing their talents in front of the creative team. Roles were cast, and rehearsals began for key ensemble numbers and principal scenes. The level of commitment and enthusiasm was exceptional, with students supporting each other and rising to every challenge with confidence.

The week concluded with a showcase performance in the Walton Theatre, giving an invited audience a taste of what’s to come. It was a brilliant celebration of student creativity, energy, and hard work.

Community week at Walton Academy continues to be a highlight of the school year, offering students the chance to collaborate, build new skills, and shine. With such a strong start, we can’t wait to see Matilda the Musical Jr. come to life on stage next year!
