On Thursday 19 September, Walton Post 16 year 12 students took part in a two-day visit to Oxford University, marking the final stage of their involvement in the Oxford NextGen project, which has supported their academic growth since year 10. Accompanied by the Head of Post 16, Miss Cluley, this trip offered the students valuable insights into university life, providing both academic guidance and personal inspiration.

Day 1: a glimpse into Oxford’s academic life

The visit began with a series of talks aimed at guiding students through the Oxford application process. From interview techniques to application strategies, the sessions equipped our students with useful knowledge for their future applications. Following this, they attended subject-specific taster talks, allowing them to explore different academic fields and gain a clearer understanding of the educational opportunities at Oxford.

To unwind after the day’s activities, the students enjoyed an evening film screening at Magdalen Auditorium. They spent the night in beautiful accommodation near the deer park, providing a calm and reflective atmosphere after a busy day.

Day 2: exploring Oxford’s academic landscape

The second day focused on attending Oxford University’s open day, where the students experienced the university’s academic and cultural environment. Two of our students joined a mini-English lecture on the works of Emily Brontë, while another student toured the university’s chemistry labs, learning about the facilities and research taking place there.

In addition to the academic sessions, the students visited several Oxford colleges, each with its own distinctive atmosphere and history. These tours gave them a better understanding of the diverse opportunities available within the university.

This visit marked the conclusion of the students’ involvement in the Oxford NextGen programme, which has played a key role in supporting their academic ambitions. Over the past few years, the project has provided them with opportunities to explore what studying at one of the world’s leading universities would entail.

A proud moment for Walton Academy

At Walton Academy, we are proud to be part of such valuable experiences. The Oxford NextGen project has helped our students develop the confidence and skills to pursue their goals. This visit was not just about academic learning but also about inspiring our students to believe in their potential and aim high.
