How will A level further mathematics be delivered?
Further mathematics is taught through in-depth theoretical lessons that extend core mathematical concepts and challenge students through complex problem solving.
You will study several key areas:
- Mathematical argument, language and proof – developing skills in logical reasoning, mathematical notation, and constructing proofs
- Mathematical problem solving – learning strategies for tackling unfamiliar problems using a range of mathematical techniques
- Mathematical modelling – applying mathematics to real-world contexts, forming and refining models
- Compulsory core content – covering complex numbers, matrices, calculus, vectors, and other advanced topics
- Application 1: Statistics – focusing on probability distributions, hypothesis testing, and statistical techniques
- Application 2: Discrete mathematics – including algorithms, graph theory, and decision mathematics used in computing and logistics
Assessment
A level further mathematics is assessed through three written exam papers, each lasting 2 hours and carrying 100 marks. Each paper contributes equally to the final grade.
