On Wednesday 24 July, the Walton Academy chess tournament reached its thrilling conclusion. The final match, held on the Walton Theatre stage, marked the end of a gripping three month competition that began with 64 competitors, including 12 staff members and 52 students from years 7 to 13.
The tournament featured a total of 128 matches, building up to an intense showdown between the final four players: Mr Birchenough, Alex R (year 10), Austin C (year 8), and Rojan M (year 9).
The Walton Theatre was transformed into a dramatic arena for the final match, complete with mood-setting music, dynamic lighting, and a smoke machine to heighten the anticipation. Two Walton students provided live commentary, adding to the atmosphere as the match was projected onto the backdrop of the stage for all to see. Spectators, including those who participated in the tournament, watched with unwavering attention.
The final match was incredibly close, with the outcome hanging in the balance until the very last moves. In the end, Mr Birchenough emerged as the overall and staff champion, while Alex R claimed the title of student champion. The excitement and tension of the final match left everyone eagerly anticipating the start of the weekly ladder matches in September, leading up to the ’25 Knockout tournament.
