On Thursday 25 June, Walton Academy was delighted to welcome children and their families to our annual year 5 open evening, with visitors enjoying an evening packed with interactive activities and the chance to discover what life at Walton Academy is all about.

Despite one of the hottest evenings of the year, families from Grantham and the surrounding area braved the high temperatures to explore the academy, meet staff and students, and experience first-hand the welcoming community that makes Walton Academy such a special place to learn.

Following three successful curriculum enrichment days earlier in the week, the open evening gave children the chance to revisit the academy with their families, while many others visited Walton for the very first time.

An evening full of discovery

Every department came alive with interactive activities designed to give children a real flavour of secondary school life.

From science investigations and geography challenges to maths puzzles, food technology, PE, languages and the creative arts, visitors were encouraged to get involved, ask questions and discover new interests.

The science department proved particularly popular, with one future Walton student saying:

“I really liked the heart dissection and looking at the lens in the eyeball.”

Meanwhile, Walton’s talented performing arts students wowed audiences with energetic dance performances from Matilda the Musical, inspiring another visitor to comment:

“I really enjoyed performing arts and watching the Walton students perform the dances from Matilda.”

Throughout the evening, Walton’s student hosts guided families around the academy, sharing their own experiences and answering questions with confidence, enthusiasm and pride.

A community that shines

Principal Jess Leonard said:

“Open evening is always one of the highlights of the year because it gives families the opportunity to experience the warmth, ambition and sense of community that makes Walton Academy so special.

“Although the weather was incredibly hot, it was wonderful to see so many families join us. I would like to thank everyone who came along and every member of staff and every student host who helped make the evening such a success. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and willingness to go above and beyond ensured our visitors received the warmest possible welcome.”

The feedback from families reflected the atmosphere throughout the evening.

One parent said:

“A very well organised evening! Thank you to your students and staff for giving up their time to present the school.”

Another shared:

“My daughter absolutely loved it. Thank you. She came home showing me all the ‘super cool free merch’ and telling me all about it. My eldest, who is in year 9 at another school, was very impressed by your performing arts department.”

Many families also praised the academy’s knowledgeable and approachable staff, the engaging activities on offer and the confidence and maturity of Walton’s student hosts, whose passion for their school left a lasting impression on visitors.
