On Tuesday 21 January, year 10 students enjoyed an unforgettable trip to Birmingham Symphony Hall to attend the highly anticipated Poetry Live! event.
The day offered valuable insights and engaging performances as students listened to some of the most respected poets in contemporary literature. Simon Armitage, the current Poet Laureate, provided fresh perspectives on his anthology pieces, while former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy shared her thoughtful and often humorous works. John Agard’s performance stood out for its blend of wit, cultural insight, and historical context. Students also enjoyed readings from award-winning poets Imtiaz Dharker and Daljit Nagra, who explored themes of identity, culture, and human experience.
Students had the opportunity to participate in the interactive Q&A session, where poets shared their creative processes and inspirations, offering valuable insights that helped bring their GCSE anthology texts to life.
The afternoon included invaluable sessions led by chief examiners, focusing on essential skills for the English literature exam. Students gained practical advice on tackling unseen poetry and making effective comparisons – a unique opportunity to hear directly from those who set and mark the exams.
For many, this trip was not only a chance to deepen their understanding of poetry but also an opportunity to see how literature connects to real-life voices and experiences.
Thank you to the English department for organising this enriching experience and to all the students for their enthusiasm and exemplary behaviour throughout the day. Poetry Live! has undoubtedly left a lasting impression, sparking ideas and confidence as students continue their literary journey.
