Normandy trip
4-7 June 2024
Walton Academy students have embarked on an exciting educational journey to the picturesque region of Normandy as part of the immersive France Chantereine Parle programme. The adventure began as they arrived at Le Château de Chantereine, their home for the next few days. Nestled in the beautiful coastal town of Criel-sur-Mer, the centre provides an ideal base for exploring the rich history and culture of Normandy.
Upon arrival, students were greeted with warm hospitality, setting the stage for a memorable stay. This evening, they are looking forward to a delightful evening meal, followed by entertaining social activities in the hotel’s communal areas. These moments offer students a chance to bond and prepare for the exciting days ahead, filled with discovery and learning.
In the coming days, students will delve deeper into the local culture and history. Tomorrow promises an enriching day starting with a continental breakfast before departing for Criel Sur Mer. There, they will immerse themselves in the vibrant local market scene, practicing their French language skills and gaining insights into Normandy’s culinary traditions. Following the market visit, the group will explore the Musée Somme 1916, learning about the significant events of World War I. The day will conclude with a visit to the Thiepval Memorial, honouring those who bravely fought during the war.
Continuing their adventure, students will venture to Parc Asterix, enjoying thrilling rides and captivating shows. As their journey in Normandy concludes, students will visit a local biscuit factory to discover traditional French confectionery, adding a sweet finale to their learning experience.
As the students prepare to depart from Normandy, they will carry with them unforgettable memories and a deeper understanding of French culture and heritage. This journey will provide real-world context to their classroom learning, enriching their studies and broadening their perspectives.
Special thanks go to the dedicated staff members – Miss Lucas, Miss Walmsley-Johnson, Mr Holmes and Mr Madejski – who are accompanying and guiding the students throughout this remarkable experience and facilitating a truly enriching journey.
