In commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day on Friday 27 January, our Holocaust ambassadors Phoebe, Zofia and Boglarka in year 13 have shown outstanding commitment to leading activities to spread awareness and increase understanding of the Holocaust amongst our academy community.  Inspired by the Lessons from Auschwitz programme during their time in year 12, they have produced a moving and informative presentation which was shown to all post 16 students on Wednesday 25 January, and recorded a video of the presentation which has been shared with all other year groups during assembly this week.

The 2023 theme set by the Holocaust Memorial Day Organisation is ‘Ordinary People’, to highlight the ordinary people who were involved in aspects of the Holocaust; whether they were the persecutors, the victims, or the bystanders. It also prompted students to consider how ordinary people just like themselves can play a larger part in challenging prejudice today.

When asked what had motivated them to undertake this piece of work, the girls said that “it is so important to spread awareness about the Holocaust as it is still relevant in today’s society”. Miss Cluley, leader of post 16 at Walton Academy, was extremely proud of them for working completely independently to provide such a valuable resource to all year groups and for embedding the ethos that we expect of all our post 16 students – to be role models for our student body and to always work above and beyond.  Thank you Phoebe, Zofia and Boglarka for your commitment and for inspiring thought-provoking conversations throughout the academy.
