Why choose AS level core mathematics?

AS level core mathematics will help you build on your maths skills beyond GCSE, without taking A level Mathematics. It focuses on real-life uses of maths and supports subjects like psychology, business, economics, geography, and science.

You’ll explore topics such as interpreting data, understanding risk, and solving everyday problems using maths. The course has been shaped by universities and employers to give you practical skills that are valued in further study, apprenticeships, and careers in technical or analytical fields.

It will also develop your ability to think logically, solve problems and communicate clearly—skills you can use in other subjects and in the workplace.

Course type: AS level

Board: AQA

Entry requirements: Grade 5 or above in GCSE maths

How will AS level core mathematics be delivered?

Core maths is taught through practical, real-life contexts with a focus on applying mathematical skills to everyday problems and data.

UnitContent
OT1: Mathematical argument, language and proofDevelops understanding of mathematical language, structure, and logical proof
OT2: Mathematical problem solvingTeaches strategies for solving unfamiliar problems using mathematical techniques
OT3: Mathematical modellingFocuses on applying mathematics to real-world situations and interpreting results

Assessment

AS level core mathematics is assessed through two written exam papers, each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes and carrying 60 marks. Both papers contribute equally to the final grade.

  • Paper 1: Analysis of data, maths for personal finance, and estimation
  • Paper 2: Critical analysis, normal distribution, probabilities and estimation, correlation and regression

Both papers include questions based on pre-release material issued two months before the exams. This material is based on a real-life context, such as income tax and national insurance calculations.

All exams are taken at the end of the course. There is no coursework component.

Progression

Core mathematics is a government and employer-supported qualification designed to develop essential mathematical skills for further study and work. Studying this course can help students to:

  • Progress confidently in mathematical skills needed for university courses
  • Prepare for higher education subjects with strong mathematical or statistical content, such as product design, economics, business, geography, science, and engineering
  • Gain practical skills valued by employers in emerging technical and professional markets
  • Build a foundation for careers in professional, technical, and analytical fields
  • Strengthen their applications for university and apprenticeships by demonstrating applied mathematical competence
