On 27 February, a group of Year 11 and Year 12 students headed to Lincoln University for the Women in Sports Media conference.

Led by the University’s School of English and Journalism, the conference aimed to make young women aware of the opportunities open to them in a traditionally male-dominated aspect of the media.

Various women from the media formed part of a panel, and led workshops to introduce different elements of sports reporting. Sky Sports presenter Jessica Creighton was one of the panel and led a workshop in presenting, where students had the opportunity to read the sports news using an autocue. Other workshops included prepping for a press conference with Molly Thompson-Smith (Olympic hopeful) and asking her questions. There were also workshops on presenting news in digital media, podcasts and producing ‘in the field’.

The conference ended with a lively and interesting question and answer session with the panel members. Our students had a great time and found the event hugely inspiring.
