Walton Academy students took part in an inspiring visit to Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) as part of the First Steps programme, immersing themselves in a day of university-style learning and activities.
The day began with a practical workshop on effective note-taking techniques, where students explored two key methods: linear notes using bullet points and titles, and mind mapping for visual organisation. These skills were immediately put into practice during a thought-provoking lecture on ‘social media – friend or foe?’ The lecture balanced the benefits of social media, such as staying connected and sharing memories, with its challenges, including the permanence of online content and its impact on attention spans.
A campus tour followed, giving students a glimpse into life at BGU. They had the opportunity to ask questions, explore the university environment, and imagine themselves as future students. Later, students participated in the creative ‘flying houses’ workshop, inspired by Edward de Bono’s thinking hats theory. Working collaboratively in groups, students analysed the concept of homes in the sky from multiple perspectives, considering challenges such as energy sourcing, food production, and socialisation. This activity not only sparked creativity but also encouraged critical thinking and teamwork.
After lunch, the focus shifted to debating the pros and cons of social media, building on ideas from the earlier lecture. This lively discussion further developed students’ skills in collaboration, analysis, and communication, rounding off a day packed with inspiration and academic exploration.
The visit to BGU provided invaluable insights into university education, equipping students with key skills for their future. With activities designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork, the First Steps programme highlights the exciting possibilities of higher education while helping students to build confidence in their own potential.
