Today, Walton Academy’s year 7 students had the exciting opportunity to engage with the British Army Youth Engagement Team. This event offered students a greater understanding of the British Army’s role, who they are, what they do, and how they contribute to society. The session also emphasised the Army’s commitment to promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while encouraging students to challenge stereotypes and maximise their potential.
Exploring career opportunities in the British Army
The day began with a dynamic presentation from the Army officers, who introduced students to the diverse range of career opportunities within the Army, from combat and engineering to logistics, IT, intelligence, medical, and ceremonial roles. Students were fascinated to learn that there are over 200 different job roles and 40+ apprenticeships available, offering pathways for both regular and reserve soldiers. The presentation also covered key aspects of Army life, such as adventure training, sports, accommodation, healthcare, and the Army’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Developing key skills through teamwork
Following the presentation, students participated in an interactive 50-minute workshop that mixed physical activities with problem-solving and teamwork challenges. These activities helped students develop essential skills such as communication, self-confidence, and collaboration while building relationships with their peers. One of the highlights of the day was when students worked in teams to build the highest structures, testing their creativity and teamwork to the fullest.
Part of our wider careers education programme
This hands-on experience not only inspired students to think about future career paths but also encouraged them to step outside their comfort zones, fostering a sense of achievement and growth. It’s just one example of the career education and guidance that Walton Academy offers across all year groups, helping students explore different career opportunities and develop essential life skills.
A special thanks to Miss Emerald, our careers lead, for coordinating this engaging session and supporting our students’ career journeys.
Thank you to the British Army Youth Engagement Team for providing such a valuable and memorable experience.
