In the lead-up to Halloween, one year 9 English class has been working on developing their non-fiction writing skills by scripting podcast minisodes with a spooky theme. This creative project has not only allowed students to explore their storytelling abilities but has also provided a fantastic opportunity to develop their oracy and reading fluency. The students carefully crafted scripts filled with eerie tales, honing their writing to engage listeners and build suspense.
Once the scripts were ready, students took to experimenting with their delivery, focusing on tone, pacing, and expression to create the perfect spooky atmosphere. Some even recorded their minisodes during the half-term break, adding their own personal touch to their projects.
As part of the project, Ms Bottomley reached out to award-winning broadcaster, journalist and playwright Danny Robins, the creator of hit BBC podcasts ‘Uncanny’ and ‘The Battersea Poltergeist’ , the latter becoming the most downloaded drama podcast in the world. To the class’s excitement, Danny sent a video message sharing his thoughts on their work and how inspired he was by their creativity. Students described the message as “so inspiring and really cool.”
Ms Bottomley commented, “It was wonderful to see the class so engaged and excited by this creative way of developing their skills in spoken language and writing.”
Walton Academy is immensely proud of the enthusiasm and dedication shown by these students. The school is grateful for Danny Robins’ support and encouragement, which has made this project all the more memorable. Thanks to initiatives like this, Walton Academy continues to nurture a love of learning and creative exploration in its students.
