Each term, Walton participates in 4-week live online sessions of the NTBC. Students read the set book and discuss it at the sessions. Each week there is a guest speaker from the world of writing/publishing, and students get the chance to ask questions about these people’s work and career paths.
Each term, too, there is a writing and an illustration competition, relating to the book being read. Last term students read Wranglestone by Darren Charlton, which featured a mysterious character dressed in a bear skin. One of our Year 9 students Destiny O drew for this competition.
Destiny was one of four winners (announced online by author Darren Charlton), and their fabulous prize is to take part in an online masterclass with Jack Noel, illustrator and designer for Little Tiger publishers, which will take place on Thursday 28 April 2022. The winning entries will be discussed, and then a Q and A session (with a focus on careers in illustration and design) will follow.
Mrs Pearson Learning and Resources Manager said “I’m really proud of Destiny for her success, and of the whole of Walton’s NTBC group for their mature approach to reading and discussing the books. They all have so many fascinating ideas to contribute each time, and really do Walton proud”.
