Course overview

Health and social care provides students with the opportunity to explore real-life care scenarios through practical and engaging learning. Lessons involve a mix of research, investigations, practical activities, visits and interactive sessions. The course builds knowledge and skills valued by both employers and further education providers, such as communication, teamwork, ICT use and problem-solving.

What will students study?

The course is structured into three interrelated components, delivered over two years:

Component 1: Human lifespan development – Students explore how individuals grow and develop through different life stages and the factors that may affect development.

Component 2: Health and social care services and values – Students learn about the health and social care sector, the services available, and the care values that underpin high-quality care.

Component 3: Health and wellbeing – Students assess the health and wellbeing of individuals and create health improvement plans based on realistic scenarios.

Each component develops knowledge, practical skills, and an understanding of working within client expectations and real-world parameters. Guest speakers and work-related experiences are integrated into the course to enhance learning.

Assessment

Components 1 and 2 are internally assessed through coursework assignments, marked against specific criteria to award Pass, Merit or Distinction at Level 1 or Level 2.

Component 3 is externally assessed through a written exam, which lasts one hour and is marked by Pearson.

Regular tutorials support students in setting improvement targets and progressing through the assessment stages.
