Why choose this subject?

Students develop their creativity through the exploration of visual language, materials, and processes. Students will work across a range of disciplines including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and mixed media. The course supports individual expression, with students developing their own personal style and areas of interest as they gain confidence.

How will this subject be delivered?

Year 12

Students build a strong foundation of practical skills while exploring a wide variety of media, techniques, and processes. They will investigate the work of artists, craftspeople, and designers, and begin to develop their own ideas through personal project work. Experimentation and independent thinking are encouraged throughout.

Year 13

Students undertake two components:

Component 01: Personal investigation
This includes a major practical project supported by a written element of 1,000–3,000 words. Students are required to develop a personal theme, demonstrating creative and technical skill through sustained work in sketchbooks and final outcomes.

Component 02: Externally set task
Students choose from a selection of themes set by the exam board and develop preparatory work over a set period. This culminates in a 15-hour practical exam where a final piece is produced.

How is it assessed?

Component 01: Personal Investigation – 60%

Component 02: Externally Set Task – 40%

Assessment is based on students’ ability to develop ideas, experiment with materials, and present resolved outcomes that demonstrate critical understanding.
